Jakob Tolstrup is an artist I stumbled upon when searching for artists that painted bizarre scenarios. His work certainly does intrigue me especially with the randomness but also the sense of humour he manages to capture at the same time. He uses a very bold palette and doesn’t seem to be afraid to attack the canvas with colour. When looking more closely at the pieces they have an illustrative feel to them especially with the ‘cartoony’ style of the subjects which only adds to the charm.  I have noticed that he doesn’t particularly have backgrounds instead he puts  the main focus on whatever resides in the foreground.  This of course makes the paintings simpler, and being someone who appreciates simplicity and prefers it; it makes me like them that little bit more. I do like his style of work but for me I think I need just a touch more realism in there or even a combination of the two. A few ideas are brewing at the minute, in the meantime I am tempted to meander into drawing and simple mark making.

Even though Ben Goossens is a photographer and I am very interested in the surreal approach he takes in his work. The rather bizarre, dark style he adopts is opposite to the more fun and humorous approach I am trying to take in my own work, giving me a broader perspective of what the possibilities are. The image with the giraffe is one of the more playful images he has created and most definitely my favourite. What I like about it is the way it tinkers with the idea of height and because its got a giraffe in it, and i really like giraffes. I have always been a huge fan of simple images and I think in this image is a perfect example of what I like. To make my research more relevant to my current practice I will be looking a lot more into contemporary surrealist painters instead of photographers although I still think they are brilliantly creative in their practice.

This is a current experimentation looking at combining the silhouette of a recognisable shape with a detailed emulsion print but placing them together in an unconventional way. What I do like about this piece is the fact it can be viewed from more than one angle. It is that combination of old and new, represented by the old status of the bowler hat but also the converse that the legs are wearing. It is still running with that idea of simplicity but I don’t think it is interesting enough for me personally, of course other people may disagree. Maybe I need to bring more colour into it but on the other hand that could be very over powering. I think at the moment I need to just keep on creating and see where that takes me.

These are the artworks which were exhibited in the Trace Exhibition which opened on Thursday the 13th of March at 5:30pm at Lambert Yard. It had a pretty good turn out all in all with a lot of people showing interest in the work we are making which is always a good sign. All of the work complimented each other very well and over all our first exhibition as a collective at Leeds College of Art was a success. I think everyone benefitted from the experience on a whole and next time we will be that little bit more prepared and ambitious about our next exhibition as a group. I think if we had prepared a little earlier this year we could have got the word out more and it could have been a pretty big event but this all comes with experience and at least we all know this for next time.

Below is the space at Lambert Yard with work installed.
